GEAR
CONTROL UNIT.
A custom gear control unit—and the first project in a growing body of electrical work for OWL’s Racing.
- TYPE
- Vehicle control system
- ROLE
- Hardware development
- CONTEXT
- Formula SAE
/ 01 — ORIGIN
The first
system.
The gear control unit was my first project for OWL’s Racing. It introduced me to developing custom electronics for a vehicle: clear interfaces, reliable behavior, physical packaging, and integration with systems designed by the rest of the team.
What began as one focused controller became the foundation for later work on the custom steering wheel and OR27’s complete electrical harness.
/ 02 — DEVELOPMENT PATH
One module.
A wider system.
The GCU later became one of the custom subsystems integrated into OR27. That progression—from a self-contained controller to a component within a fully CAD-designed vehicle harness—captures the value of the project better than treating it as an isolated board.
This case study will expand with the original CAD, electronics architecture, and validation process as the project archive is prepared.
